Can challenges be turned into opportunities?
A quick glance at the DACH region would lead to the conclusion that everything looks bright. The latest figures put Germany and Austria first and second respectively in recycling municipal waste among the 27 EU member states. Among all 33 European countries, both EU and non-EU, Switzerland ranks sixth.
This is a good beginning, as it shows the DACH region is already thinking of waste as part of the
circular economy. But there’s a deeper story here. Even in the best of times, waste & recycling players have to maneuver around tight margins. Recyclers especially walk a tightrope, operating in what has always been a volatile climate. But the addition of recessionary pressures, rising electricity costs, smaller cash reserves and constantly changing regulations around sustainability has brought many players, both waste and recyclers, to the breaking point.
