Solid waste management produced an estimated 1.6 billion tons of CO2 equivalent of greenhouse gas emissions in 2016, according to a 2019 World Bank report. This corresponds to around 5% of global emissions. If the sector does not improve these figures, waste-related emissions will rise to 2.6 billion tons of CO2 equivalent by 2050.

Given that the DACH region is the world leader in waste generation, the industry cannot hide from the problem.

The International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) is calling on waste and recycling companies to take action to reduce their own greenhouse gas emissions. The way forward is clearly through a circular economy approach to business.

For many companies, this is easier said than done in the current economic climate. The good news is that beginning or progressing your digital transformation can have a profound impact, and not just on the environment. Operating under the circular economy model opens economic opportunities, reduces your operating costs and expands your profit margins.

The bottom line is that improving your sustainability performance through digitalization goes hand in hand with financial benefits.
